Checklist following a death

Register the death

Arrange funeral

Notify time, date and place to family and friends

Check the deceased’s house

Remove valuables

Drain water system

Cancel deliveries e.g. milk and papers

Redirect mail

Lodge keys securely, not marked with address

Confirm that the property is insured

Inform landlord if property is vacant, if appropriate

Inform council to stop payments of council tax and organise refund if paid in full for the year

Inform all utilities, electric, gas, telephone, sky or cable suppliers
